HMRC Filing Changes April 28

UK Companies House Filing Changes: Is Your Business Ready for 2028?
The UK government has confirmed that significant changes to Companies House filing requirements will take effect from April 2028, giving businesses more time to prepare for the move to digital reporting.

These reforms will affect all limited companies, including micro-entities and small businesses.

What’s Changing?
Mandatory Profit & Loss Accounts
Small companies and micro-entities will now be required to file a Profit & Loss (P&L) account with their annual accounts. Businesses can choose not to have this information published on the public register.

Digital Filing Only
From April 2028, all accounts must be submitted using approved accounting software in iXBRL format. Paper filing and the Companies House web filing service will no longer be available.

Abridged Accounts Removed
The option to file abridged accounts will end, meaning eligible companies must submit full statutory accounts.

Other Key Updates
Enhanced audit exemption statements will be required on the balance sheet.
Annual accounts must be submitted as a single filing.
New limits will apply to shortening a company’s accounting reference period.
Why the Delay?
These changes were originally planned for April 2027 but have been postponed until April 2028 following industry feedback, giving businesses additional time to prepare and adopt suitable accounting software.

What Should Businesses Do Now?
If you’re still relying on manual processes or paper-based filing, now is the right time to move to compliant accounting software. Preparing early will make the transition smoother and help ensure your business remains compliant.
